From a birthday party…into a fish stomach

         Στιγμιότυπο 2021-07-02 11.24.40 μμ

1. The sun had begun to set when a group of about ten people began to arrive at the beach with the appropriate equipment for a beach party... Refrigerators, chairs, balloons, tables, soft drinks, a variety of food. I watched them from the yard of my house and I was happy for them ... Everything went smoothly, they swam, danced, sang and generally had a very pleasant atmosphere!

Suddenly, a strong wind blew and all the cans of their soft drinks, plastic cups and some of the balloons, went into the sea and even worse, none of them cared! They had no conscience to go and collect them. They all continued to spend their time happily, as if nothing had happened.

At that time, I was mad with their attitude and I decided to go and explain them what they should do and how harmful it was for all the living organisms of the sea.

The children seemed to understand and they immediately started to pick them up but unfortunately it was too late. Much rubbish was already in the sea…

"I was sure they would save me, that they would get me out ... I kept thinking that they could not, they would surely know the huge ecological disaster they are causing at the moment and the danger to which they put millions of marine species ... I was a garbage bag and while I was constructed to reduce environmental pollution, collect garbage and end up in the blue recycling bin, I am now part of the threat to the marine environment ... I have heard of fish and marine animals endangered by plastic waste and I knew ... I knew about sea turtles that cannot distinguish a plastic bag in the water from a jellyfish which is its food. I knew about dolphins drowning in bags, I knew about whales that washed up on the shores with their stomachs full of rubbish and plastic. I knew and I did not want to be the cause of any of these. I was just hoping to be "saved" so as to “save” the ecosystem,I hoped for a plan B as the earth is what we all have in common and THERE IS NO PLANET B!

Ioannidou Sofia

2) It was a usual day, on a shelf at the supermarket. I was sitting with my siblings and we were waiting patiently for a little child to come and get us by telling her mother : “can we also get this plastic cups for the party, please ?”

Well, it was different. It was 3:02,when the employees brought new party items on our self and I remember how excited we were to hear the new cups’ stories of how they came here from the factory .Suddenly a middle-aged ,well dressed woman ,with a  crazy hairstyle and some colorful ribbons, came along in our shelf.

She was upset and she was looking for something specific .Then,a glance at our package which was on discount, made her being relieved. Suddenly she grabbed us and she started running towards the cashier. After the payment, she put us in the front sit in her car. She started speeding up like she wanted to catch up a plane.

When we arrived at her home, she took us and she started walking hastily while we were observing the place. It was a colorful house, full of balloons and lights and I immediately came up with the idea that this was a party. We all panicked because when we were at the supermarket’s aisle 3, the elderly cups ware telling us stories about the parties and they weren’t pleased.

When she placed us on the table with this awful tablecloth beside the plastic plates and the soft drinks, I thought that the world inside the supermarket was nothing if you compare it to the outside. All of these people who bought us without knowing how much they harm the environment, it is their entire fault and they are the one who we should be blamed for the global warming and the environmental issues.

After two hours of parting, everything was a mess and my head was spinning around .We were exhausted and I was feeling angry and downhearted at the same time .My siblings were on the ground .Some of them were injured and some other were in some huge, black, plastic bags. The people there, didn’t respect their place and this was making me more furious.

Suddenly, I felt a human hand grapping me and it threw me  into a white big hole which was making a really loud noise .It was like a whirlpool because it was pulling me inside.  All of a sudden, after a long ride in the dirty and disgusting tube which was like I was in a waterslide but this time wasn’t funny at all,I was at the bottom of a coral reef.

I was amazed, it was so different of how the elderly cups were describing it.There were trash and plastic everywhere .It was pathetic and this was the real truth! Sometimes I wish humans would be a fish for a single day and see what is going on under the sea.

On my way to the surface I came across a little turtle who offered me to take me to the mainland. The journey was too long, so we started talking about our lives. She was very depressed and lonely. She had just lost her father by accident! One day when they went for hunting, her dad ate a plastic bag  thinking that it was jellyfish so he drowned .It was unthinkable of how much we are harming the environment and unfortunately is too late to fix what we have done. When I came to the surface I started thinking ways that they could help the environment, so when I found a recycling bin, I got in as I would make new friendships anyway. So everyone could help via one small action every time in order to save our planet from this massive disaster and preserve our earth as clean as possible for the other generations!

What is really happening to our world

3) It was Olivia's sixteenth birthday and she decided to organise a beach party. She started the party's preparations and she made invitations to give to her friends. The day of the party all her friends came. They had a great time until the end of the party. When the party was over Olivia packed her stuff. She went home but she left a few small pieces of garbage on the beach. The next day because of the strong wind that prevailed some of the rubbish was swept into the sea while others ended up in the city's streets.

Some residents of that area had created an ecological organisation. They had carried out various clean-up projects during the summer. A few days after Olivia's party they cleaned the coast. Unfortunately, some pieces of garbage had already reached the bottom of the sea including a piece of plastic glass. And just like this the journey of the plastic piece started.

The plastic piece didn't stay in a specific place due to the streams and as a result it wandered in several parts of the sea. In the beginning it visited a shipwreck which belonged to pirates. The shipwreck caught its attention. So the plastic piece wanted to explore it. It was very curious to see what's inside. In the shipwreck it found a treasure with golden jewellery, pearls and ancient currencies.

The biggest phobia of the plastic piece was the fish because they thought that the plastic piece was a sea plant and there was a high chance they would eat it. For this reason it constantly avoided them. While it was exploring the shipwreck it heard a flock of fish coming and it ran away as fast as it could. At some point it became entangled in some seaweed. A group of friendly fish saw what happened and tried to help it. The plastic piece wondered why they didn't attack it. They told it that they aren't going to hurt it but they just want to hang out with it. After a while they became inseparable friends. The fishes told it that they couldn't continue hanging out with it because the other fishes were judging them. They believed that they shouldn't be friends with anyone else except for fishes of the same kind with them. So the plastic piece carried on its trip without any company. Since its friends had abandoned it, the plastic piece decided to find its family, namely the other pieces of the plastic glass. It had no idea where to go or who it should ask and it lived with the hope of finding its family again.

As long as it was part of the plastic glass and before it ends up to the sea it had heard that some plastics were thrown at special bins called recycling. Through these bins the plastics were transported to factories where they were processed in order to be reused. Its current goal was to end up with its family in one of these bins. Its dream remained unfulfilled since without being able to react a huge fish ate it. Unfortunately, neither the fish nor the plastic survived at the end.

The crying of a burning tree

Στιγμιότυπο 2021-07-02 11.22.17 μμ

1. A burned tree

Ah! I was a very strong and strong

A very tall tree.

But now I am a burnt tree

weak, short.

Otherwise I saw the other trees

they were happy, happy…

after the flames though

are unhappy

burned… some dead!

I believe that joy will come again

but… many years will pass…

Theodoropoulos Theodoros

2. Τhe crying of a burning tree

I look around and I see only  burned trees

An unbearable smell surrounds all the area

I don’t know how to deal with this situation

All I feel is rage about this demonstration

Things used to be different back then

People were proudly looking us from the sky

And all they saw was greenery and pride

I am really sad because the next generation

Won’t know us, the proud forest, that we used to be…

Georgaki  Melina

3. A lonely tree

I was a lonely tree

in the middle of amazonius

I was happy and content

until suddenly…

I was burning,I was so afraid ,

 I smelt burning ...

I didn’t know what to do!

I saw all around

the fire was burning everything…

When  the fire was coming near me,

I was shaking …

I was listening screamings

and I was seeing everyone burning

It could be my last breath.

I didn’t want to do it anymore.

It was so hot .

The total sentiment was awful.

I just hoped there was another life.

To live again, to be happy.

Just as it was in my previous life.

Before this total disaster!

Georgara Maria

4.Fiery enemy

I remember what happened

as if it were yesterday,

The forest was completely destroyed by the great fire,

Me too, a simple little tree,

my life changed in a minute,

My life was beautiful,

in the forest, in the fresh air,

But when I saw the big fire,

I froze, I felt scared.

Fortunately ... I'm fine ... despite all the burned.

I hope to be green again

I hope I do not relive this nightmare.

Panitsas Andreas

5. Everything changed

I am a burned tree

My life has changed a lot!

We , all the forest’s trees,

used to be happy!

Until one day!

Suddenly …a big fire began!

We all were burned out!

Everything changed!

Less oxygen,

Less water…

People ought to walk a long distance

In order to find water…

Our place will soon change

It ‘ll look like desert!

Misery everywhere!

Dedei Frantzesca

6. The loneliness of a tree

Laughter, songs, voices, children are running, playing hide and seek around the trees. Cheerful children , happy children of the city.

I am always there, a sleepless guard, waiting for them to come. Young and elder people. I am willing to give them my shadow, my branches to climb, my flowers to smell them, the fruits to taste them, the oxygen to breathe. I was living, growing up and waiting for the time to come …

But many times there comes another moment that you do not expect …

Heat, extreme heat, drought, drought, no water.

Everything starts to bow its head, to wither, to be left alone ...

Nobody is coming anymore. I'm left alone and waiting … Have they  forgottenme? They don't need me anymore … I have nothing to give them ... What a pity! But I  am the same tree ,I haven’t changed   myself …

I haven’t done something that make them  feelbad.

On the contrary, they did not appreciateme , did not respect me and now they are paying for their ignorance. Is it too late? Is there still time, a way to correct their mistake? Let them think and act.

It is in their hands! It depends on them!

Tsiako Redona

7.  Τhe crying of a burning tree

I was living in the long lush rainforest of Amazon. My friends and I were very beautiful, tufted and full of life. I was living in  the river side,  where  river  flows into the Atlantic ocean. Every day a young girl called Artemis and her brother called Kostas were visiting me. Some days they ‘re having pic nic under my shadow , and other times they were singing and were telling stories each other. My favoutite fairytale was             «Τhe kind-hearted witch».

The next days I was waiting for them but they never came.Τhe days passed and the children were not seen. I started to worry. I was sure that something bad was happening.

At that moment I saw smoke coming from the village where the children lived. The smoke was coming towards the forest. It was getting closer and closer. I started to get scared. All the birds tht were on me started to fly away , the animals sitting on my trunk started to run away and even the fish started to swim fast.

All the creatures of the forest had realized the danger. They were trying in every way to rescue.  Unfortunately the fire did not take long time to arrive.  Everywhere you could see thick smoke  and  voices of despair were heard.

Then the fire reached me too. My green leaves were burning …until I had no leaves left. I was in a lot of pain. I  could not breathe. I asked for help but in vain. The fire destroyed the whole forest. The fire left me black and dry, without life anymore.

Later the firefighters arrived and after many hours of efforts they extinguished the fire, but the bad  had happened. Nothing reminded the rainforest of Amazon. Everything were black and lifeless.  I was very sad.

Τwo years later. Εverything has started to change. I have started to take leaves, to give oxygen back to nature.  I  am green again and full of colours . People rebuilt their houses and leave hapilly .

Artemis and Kostas are coming again as before . Today they will come to sing. Ahhhh!!!!! Here they are!

8. Why  why..  so spitefullness…

My life started from  a small seed which fell on the ground and little by little  I sprouted and took out shoots, leaves, fruits. People loved to eat my fruits,  as they were very nice.   Αs I was growing up I was seeing around the other tree that were taller and stronger than me.                                                                                         One day I saw a man setting fire to a tree.  Αfter a while sparks started to be thrown at other trees as well .  At one point a sparkle reached to me.  I was in pain , I was feeling so weak, there was nothing I could do. The hours were passing , the flames  were burning our branches. A group of firefighters started throwing water to us  and after a while they managed to put out the fire. The evil had been done. I was relieved but I was very angry with the man who let us burn without mercy. He was a criminal.  I  felt  ashamed and sad because I could no longer make people happy . Everyone looked at me with pity. The thing that  bothered me was the question “ why did this man want to see trees burning , animals and birds dying in this cruel and unjust way? I had many questions but most of them were unsolved mysteries for me .

Τhe hours, the days the years passed so sadly for me ... There was no trace of joy around me. In time, I began to sprout, to blossom , to have  fruits again ... But that was not enough. People did not care about me. The younger  trees gave joy to people. They had neglected me ... The same questions still torture  me .

 Why…why…why…  so spitefullness…

A book is travelling  by a torrent
because of a flood in the town

1.There is hope…

It has been a long time since that catastrophic flood. It was a quiet sunny afternoon. The kids’ mother as she used to read me to the children.  They enjoyed my story and from time to time were laughing. Nothing foretold what would follow next. Within minutes the sky became dark, a strong cold wind started and it didn’t take long for the first thick drizzles to fall. Thunder and lightning filled the weather scene.

The mother approached the open window to see what was happening.I almost fell from her hands. The roads had been turned into torrents that in their passage swept away what they found. Garbage bins, wood, stones… The yard within minutes became a lake. The water level started to rise, reach the doors and enter the house. The terrified children were screaming and did not know what to do.The mother from her panic threw me abruptly and I found myself with a dip struggling to escape the waters. The mother was trying to get the water out with a broom dragging me too unintentionally. I found myself swimming in despair… Everywhere there were voices of terror and people were running in panic…Without doing anything meaningful.

My pages became all wet.The water was taking from me here and there.I was knocking all the time. It dragged me into a forest with many trees and bushes. The pain was unbearable.   My pages were torn one after another. I was despaired… My life was coming to an end. My covers were pounding on the tree trunks.  I was very terrified and scared … I don’t know how I ended up in the sea. My few pages were skinned on the rocks. A vortex of water swirled around me for a while and washed me ashore.

Everything had calmed down. Nothing reminded me of what I went through a while ago. I found myself alone, with no one next to me, without the company of kids. All that was left was my cover that wrote in faded letters my title.”There is hope”. I wonder if there is… I stayed aside waiting, hoping that someone would find me,take care of me and might be lucky even if I was injured,to get back in the library of a house.

2.The adventure of a book in a flood

On a sunny spring day,a year ago, I experienced a nightmare adventure.

While a ten-year-old boy was reading me, sitting near the window of his room and as I was feeling the sun warming up my pages, I suddenly saw threatening clouds cover the light. Within a few minutes a strong shower of rain burst out.The young reader closed the window in order not to let the rain come in. Before he could turn another page, the frightened voice of a woman was heard. <<Get out of the house at once. >>

The little boy put me immediately in a bag with other things but a gust of wind grabbed me. As I was flying, I felt so cold. It didn’t take long for me to tear and fall down…

The kid looked at me surprised and sad. I was swimming in dirty water. That’s how the chaos started… I was hearing the wind blow, the trees uprooted, people shouting desperately, cars are being swept away by the rushing water.I was hit from end to end, on sidewalks, on car tires, in yards of houses.

I didn’t know where I was and where I would end up. I thought my end had come. A while ago I was in a quiet house, lying on the tender kid’s hands and now… everywhere screams, fear, desperation. The hours passed and I wandered around, I dived into the rushing waters and came out on the surface (yet again).

After a few hours that seemed centuries to me, I started seeing fish, octopuses and sea creatures. A whale opened its mouth and swallowed me.Time passed and I washed out in a jungle with tall trees and wild animals. The sun was strong and it started burning my body. I was lucky. An old man with slanted eyes approached me, examined me for a while and took me with him.

When we caught port, we went to his house, he showed me to his family and he put me on a shelf of a bookcase that was labeled << Distressed books- Do not touch >>.

Here I have been lying since then.

3. The Story of a Book”

I am a teenage literary book and one year ago I lived in the library of a Junior High School. The students were reading me all over again and I was very happy. Anna was the last student who read me. One day, a very strange thing happened. While Anna was reading me and had reached one page to last, page 346 in particular, she was very anxious to find out what the ending was. Suddenly, she felt her feet getting wet. She looked down and saw the floor flooding! She notified the other kids who were around and started running as fast as they could. The good thing is Anna took me with her and that’s how I was saved!

When we got out of there, Anna saw an enormous wave of water, which was as big as the school and frightened her very much. A few seconds later the wave fell upon us! Unfortunately due to the turbulence, we were separated. I don’t know what happened to her, whether she survived or not, but I am very thankful that she saved me.

Luckily, while I was struggling in the water, I fell onto a large wooden plank and that’s how I didn’t get torn or dissolved. When I calmed down and ensured that I was alright, I looked the people around me. Everybody was screaming and they all had weird feelings, mainly between fear and sadness. Suddenly, a man tried to catch the wooden plank I was lying on and dropped me in the water. Then I started sinking more and more and after a while I reached the bottom. I was being dragged pretty badly for hours, by the undertow.

After 3 days of struggling in the furious waters, I was torn, beaten and feeling sad, because the back cover and the last page where missing. I was feeling very useless because I was a book with no ending…

I finally washed up outside a house, which hadn’t been damaged by the flood and   was a few miles away from the school.

After two days full of anguish, a girl named Sophie, came and picked me up from the street and took me to her house. She put some sticky tape on my torn pages, she dried me well and after a while she started reading me. After 1 hour she had read all of my 346 pages and then she found out that the last page was missing and she couldn’t find out the ending. She got upset and she left me on her desk.

The next morning, Sophie woke up, took a piece of paper and a pencil and started writing. She was writing for 3 hours straight! When she finished, she took me from her desk, glued the piece of paper she had written, after page 346 and then started reading me all over again. When she got to page 346 I thought to myself “Oh, not again! Too bad! She will throw me away now, because my ending is missing”! But she kept on reading. I was so excited because I then realized that the piece of paper she had written was the ending of my story! I must confess that it’s so much nicer than the old one!

Now I am happier than ever! Thanks to Sophie, I am a full and complete book again!

4. Greetings everyone.

I would like to share with you my life story, how I lived, my adventures, where I wandered and how I ended up narrating my story today!

I am of old age,  my pages are wrinkled, used, and yellowed. Many hands have touched me, many people have read me and have been entertained.

Some years ago, an old beautiful woman, chose me from a bookcase to read me. Everyday she read few of my pages, out in the open of her balcony of her home. She was holding me with politeness and respect. One day as I was lying on the table outside, everything started going dark. Winds were blowing, thunder and lightning tore through the sky. It was not long before it started to rain. I couldn’t understand how I was found lying in the garden, in the dirt, soaked. Within minutes I was carried away to the street. Rain streams carried me away and I was stuck between a car’s tires. There were loud voices, terror, fear and despair in the air. What was going to happen? I was lost. Next to me chairs, bags, tables, all sorts of things run by. The rush of water lead me floating on the street.

I was wandering here and there, until a hand grabbed me. Days passed, it took care of me, cared for me, cleaned me and took me to have my pages fixed. My covers were restored after having been nearly destroyed.

Now I am proudly on a bookcase shelf once more. Clean, new, and ready to offer pleasure, happiness, and knowledge to anyone who choses me.

Many thanks to the man that saved me!

5.The life of a book

A few months ago I  was a pretty, happy book with many stories. I was very happy because I had funny stories that were read by children and I made them laugh. But all of sudden I became a ripted, empty book because of a flood.

One day,  while  I was sleeping in my library , suddenly I heard voices! I got scared! When I saw everything flooded, I panicked because as everybody knows, I am made of paper and paper gets torned and spoiled by water. But due to my disability to run, I had lost all my hopes of being paved. That is how I eded in the sea.

Now, nobody cares about me, the only good thought is that I have seen, I have learned and I have lived many different experiences, pretty and ugly ones. I visited many countries, without knowing their names because nobody has told me about!  I realized that from different the climate and lifestyle!

I have passed through a river in a forest where fires burned trees, nature was destroyed and the oxygen was reducted. Then, I arrived at a place which had huge areas of sea, but it was too hot. I had no more strength! There was nothing to do but wait to go to some other place. After a few weeks,  I arrived even further  where it was very cold. There were icebergs which after a few days started to melt and pieces of ice fell on me!  It was much worse there but fortunately I got onto a piece of ice and by the time it melted.

I reached the next country of that difficult journey. It was a place that had very strong wind that it torn some pages of me! There was left very little of me l!  That is why I was very upset but I had no time to think because I could do nothing.Suddenly, I saw a hurricane  coming towards me. By the time I realized what it was, it took me away!  Many serious disasters took place. I saw houses destroyed and I remembered my own house. About one day later the hurricane had left, but a huge destructive wave came, that scared me little more but it was nothing. I could do nothing so I have been through destructive too. After that, I fell sleepy because I hadn’t slept for many days.

As soon as I woke up, I was on a beautiful beach with cool weather and people swimming in the sea. That was the final destination before I ended up here. A man picked me up and put me in a recycling bin! Fortunately it is calm here without destructions and sad issues. In this adventure I learned many things… I learned the huge climate change  from country to country.

The people should take care their planet so that they can live healthily on our beautiful earth. That is up to them!

CREATIVE WRITING - DESERTIFICATION

Στιγμιότυπο 2021-07-02 11.27.38 μμ

1.My dear friend,

How are you? I Hope you're okay. Unfortunately, I'm not so well. Here, where I live, in the Sahel, the sun is too hot. It’s so hot that we have been observing the phenomenon of desertification for some time now. The biggest problem of course is the drought, because apart from the heat, water is scarce. The plants are dying and the roads are starting to wrinkle and break into pieces. For the same reason, my father's crops were destroyed. He is unemployed. We have to migrate, to come further north, to a country in Europe. I do not know how long we will live. The food is scarce and our water reaches at most for another two days at most. I hope we can do it ... I'm waiting for your news!

Your friend, Andreas Panitsas

2. Μy dear friend,

Perhaps you are reading my letter while you are eating…I’m urgently asking for your help!

I live in a small village, in which we are not able to grow any plant…There are no trees , neither water! I am obliged to walk about 3 kilometers in order to find clean water. And of course, the quality of water we use is not suitable enough. We use the same quality of this both for drinking and washing. That’s why we took an important desision : to leave our country…Due to hunger and thirst…Fortunately, some volunteers visit our people and offer a great help! You know, we are planning to migrate to Europe…

Those are my bad news…

3.My dear friend Christine,

How are you?

Lately things here have gotten worse, as in my area the phenomenon of desertification is observed, and we don’t know what to do in this situation we are in! We are in despair!

We are scared as to why such strange phenomenon is happening. I can’t help but feel sadness, because where everything was once green, now it resembles a desert.

I hope everything can turn back to how it was but it sure will need time, if it can turn back to how it was.

Anyways, I wanted to hear your news, how you are doing, if everything is good to you there.

I will wait for your reply

Goodbye

Dimitra Dagouni

4.My dear friend,

Here, with time things get worse.

The water shortage makes us walk miles in order to find some water…The animals are gone, and we have no more jobs or money, to the point there isn’t enough to buy food.

We are forced to sell the sheep, because we don’t have food to feed them. Also I have missed the fresh smell of oxygen, all the sounds of the forest, the singing of birds, the trees…Nevertheless things aren’t so bad, we are being offered help from small teams. They come and give us food and clothes, and provide us some company.

Anyhow, things don’t seem to be going any good, and me and my family are thinking of moving to another place.

Will your country be good to emigrate in?

Adrian Antokitsei

5.My dear friend Angel,

I am writing you this letter to speak to you about the problems I am facing in my area because of the desertification that is observed over the last years, and also to tell you the reasons that will force me to emigrate.

To start with, the phenomenon of desertification that exists in my area, has turned the forest in a barren land, something that causes a shortage to the production of food, leading us to economical destruction. My family, that works with agricultural production, despite the measures it took to fight the desertification, wasn’t able to contain it, and as a result we are forced to leave our land.

The decision to emigrate worries me a lot, because I do not know how it is to live in a big city, that is why I feel a lot of stress and anguish. Life in the city, in my opinion, will keep me further away from nature and will lead me to a more difficult and different lifestyle, away from everything I know.

I would like to know your opinion, as you live in a city in Europe, so as to advise me how I should deal with my new reality

With love, your friend

Francesca Nteintei

6.Dear Maria,

At the moment I am not very well, due to a phenomenon that has been created in my area, and that is the phenomenon of desertification. It is a very catastrophic phenomenon, and from what I’ve been told it is irreversible !!!To prevent this, there must be water…But this is hard as our only source of water is very far away…Sometimes the water is polluted but we have no other choice…In that well we wash ourselves, wash our clothes, drink the water and do everything that is water related. We are living in very difficult times , thank god we have volunteer groups helping us , bringing us food, clean water and in general various first aid things. Another important problem, is that since we have no more trees, the oxygen levels have dropped as a direct result of desertification. That’s all I had to say about the most difficult problem I am facing in the country I am living. I hope you are having a better time

Lots of kisses, your friend

7.My dear friend Angela,

I hope you’ re ok. Unfortunately  things are getting worst in the area I live. Do you remember what I’ ve written you in my last letter about the phenomenon of the desertification?

I hope you can understand that this is a huge problem. The desertification is a form of degradation of the land into dry areas. The problems, come out of this, are lot. We don’t have water and the animals are dying. The ground is breaking, the trees are getting dry and falling down, as they can’t live without water. As a result we, the people, don’t have enough oxygen and food, since the animals and the trees are offering us much of our everyday food. So it’s a daily phenomenon people to pass away because of the starvation.

Every day I wish, I could be in your position and we wouldn’t have so many problems with the nature. If only could be something, so my land could be fixed…

With love,

your friend from Africa

 Giota Clementine.

8.Dear Adriani,

I Hope you are Ok! . I'm writing this letter to tell you the problems my country facing. As everybody knows and you will learn,  we have desertification in my country. Because of that, there is no water near us! We have to walk 6 kilometers to bring some water from a fountain. We take two pots and carry without breaking  them.... With this water we wash our bodies and our clothes…we soon get very thirsty… it’s very difficult. We can't do it any more. The only good thing is that every week a group of volunteers come and help us by offering us food, water, clothes and emergency stuff to write .As you can see, it's not like your country where you have plenty of water!I wish I were in your place and could live with freedom without being  afraid of death due to  starving and thirsting. We decided with my parents to go in a European country to live happily , with joy but we know that is very difficult and it’s impossible for the moment ! Finally, let's hope to live the life we couldn't live for so many years. It's time to go and pack my baggage and decide with my parents what we will do! I hope you have a good time in your country…

Kisses, Your friend Maria

Georgara Maria

9. My dearest Niko,

How are you? Living under difficult circumstances, we feel miserable! Our region is becoming a desert! So, we are obliged to abandon it! I am afraid due to that situation , because if we abandon it , we will lose our home!Except for that, we are obliged to walk a long distance in order to find water…The only positive aspect has to do with the volunteer teams, which

give us a great help!I wish I were in a Eyropean country !

You should appreciate and enjoy all the goods you have!

Just think of being in my place!

10.Dear Irene,

A few days ago you wrote to me that you were curious to learn about this strange phenomenon that happens in the area where I lived. The phenomenon of desertification. And this is also the reason why I’m writing to you.

Things got worse shortly before I had to emigrate. The sun was unbearable, as was its temperature. Drought has forced every living plant or crop to perish. So, without our farming, the animals we raised had to be sold because we had nothing to feed them. The roads began to crack with huge openings that slowly became impassable. It was very dangerous, it was difficult to survive in these conditions. So, without a second thought, my family and I decided to emigrate. As you can see, after the crops were destroyed and the animals were sold, my father no longer had the job or the basics to survive. And somehow we found ourselves here, temporarily living in an area a little further away until we find a solution.

Anyway, I hope this tiring situation ends soon. I can’t wait to meet again someday. Wish you the best!

11.My dear friend,

Unfortunately in my area we are dealing very strongly with the phenomenon of desertification. It is very difficult for our lives. We have had very high temperatures and minimal rains in recent years, unfortunately the problem is not going to be solved and we are thinking of migrating due to lack of water.

We have reached the point not only of being able to do the necessary things with the use of water but we have reached the point of being thirsty, there are no more jobs, we have high unemployment and poverty there is a terrible reduction in agricultural production making very few expensive agricultural products .And as you understand my future is uncertain, that is why I am forced to emigrate.

I would like you to tell me your opinion if your country is a good choice for me.

Thank you for listening to my problem   !

Maybe at some time we will get to know each other better.                                                      With appreciation,

Aggeliki Pouladaki
